Sherlock Holmes has not only attracted the attention of numerous readers and academics all over the world, but also overshadowed almost every other Victorian sleuth, real or fictional. I would like to invite scholars and specialists to contribute to a planned volume on these other nineteenth-century detectives and their continued presence in our culture. The collection will explore the diversity of the characters, their skills and cases, as well as the ways of (re)introducing or rewriting them for the late 20th- and early 21st-century audiences.
The submissions should address themes and questions concerning adaptations, appropriations, or revisions of the following detectives: • Inspector Jonathan ‘Jack’ Whicher, • Inspector Frederick Abberline, • Inspector Edmund Reid, • Sergeant Cuff, • Inspector Bucket, • Inspector G. Lestrade, • Inspector Tobias Gregson. Suggestions for submissions concerning other detectives, real or fictional, are welcome. Proposals of approximately 300 words with a short bibliography and a 50-word author note should be sent by October 23, 2016. Selected proposers will be notified of acceptance by November 7, 2016. Full articles of 5,000-7,000 words, including bibliography and endnotes, should be sent by February 28, 2017. Formatting guidelines: • a Word file using a double spaced Times New Roman 12 font, • the referencing must conform to MLA (7th edition), • the first page should carry the title, author’s name, institutional affiliation, a 200-word abstract, and 5-7 key words, • a 50-100-word biographical note should follow the list of Works Cited. Please send all queries and proposals to: lucyna.krawczyk@uw.edu.pl
