Crime Fiction Studies

Crime Fiction Studies is an innovative journal that provides a much-needed, academically strong publication within the area of Crime Fiction that is both focused, interdisciplinary and international. It draws scholars together through a series of themed and general issues which explore the status of the genre today, its history, social and cultural influences and current popularity.
For more information, please visit the Edinburgh University Press website.
Crime Fiction Studies (CFS) provides a forum for the dissemination of contemporary high-quality scholarly works within the crime fiction genre and associated academic areas, along with evaluative reviews of recent academic publications within the broad, multidisciplinary and multi-media field of crime fiction studies. The journal also includes an online website (with a blog) and a social media presence that is already established and growing.

CFS is unique insofar as there are currently no comparable journals in the UK. As interest grows in crime fiction as an academic subject area, it has become imperative that an academic journal should be established. CFS fills this gap and is an invaluable resource for those both interested in writing on, and reading about, crime fiction. The journal has a broad scope, ranging from contemporary crime fiction back to the beginnings of the genre, while at all times relating central social, cultural and historical themes to the preoccupations of today’s world.

CFS is edited by Professor Fiona Peters and assistant editors Dr. Kerstin-Anja Münderlein and Ffion Davies.

Call for Submissions: Gender in Crime

This themed edition of Crime Fiction Studies, “Gender in Crime” (March 2024, guest edited by Kerstin-Anja Münderlein), will examine the ways in which Crime Fiction as a genre incorporates and (re-)negotiates gender and sex, and represents and/or questions normativity and deviance in gender and sexual identities throughout its own generic developments and also in regard to true crime and historical events.

This themed issue of Crime Fiction Studies will examine the intricate connection of gender and crime fiction, drawing on the multiple threads that have fed into the genre since its inception. Contributors are invited to explore the crossing of forms and themes within Crime Fiction to challenge the notions of gender and sexuality within the genre. Abstracts dealing with Crime Fiction past and present, true crime narratives, Gothic and crime, television and film studies, and other forms of new media such as blogs, computer games, websites and podcasts are welcome, as are papers adopting a range of theoretical, sociological and historical approaches.

Deadline for abstracts: 28 February 2023
Deadline for full-text submissions: 31 July 2023
