Our friends at the 221B magazine have some exciting news—after its 6th year of success, they are introducing a quarterly online English edition! For those of you who don't know, 221B is a bimonthly crime fiction and culture magazine that was first published in Turkey on January 2016. 221B is not just a crime fiction magazine; it is also a crime culture magazine. 221B is committed to handling various subjects regarding universal and local crime fiction including crime narratives, comic books, academic research, film & TV and book reviews, author interviews and of course short stories.
Crime fiction reaches a wider group of readers and audiences all over the world with each passing day. But how well do we know about the crime narratives of other countries and cultures? Beyond the works that are translated to our language or the ones in English that we can read and watch, what other crime fiction works are read or watched in other cultures? How can talented crime fiction writers from foreign countries meet with crime readers in various countries of the world? How can we make sure that significant academicians who carry out research in crime fiction can reach out to people interested in crime fiction from all over the world?
With all these questions in mind, 221B team decided to publish an English Edition of 221B Magazine which will meet its readers quarterly. And our first issue in English is out! Let's take a closer look:
  • In this issue, we wanted to explore the evolution of the detective figure in literature, cinema, and TV and prepared a detailed case file on this.
  • Alessandra Calanchi penned an article on the evolution of the detective in crime novels and short stories while George Grella wrote an article on the evolving detective in television and cinema.
  • But how about what awaits us in the future? Mesut Demirbilek wrote about future forms of crime and policing and their place in mysteries.
  • Finally, Valentina Re penned an article on pending investigations into contemporary Italian female detectives.
  • We also have amazing articles apart from our case file. Ian Campbell Ross wrote an extensive article on the development of crime fiction in Ireland.
  • Barry Forshaw penned a delightful article on his meetings with Hitchcock and Highsmith.
  • We have an amazing article by Cynthia Schmidt-Cruz exploring the Mom Thriller which is a new subgenre that explores the trials of motherhood.
  • Not over yet! In our first English issue, we gave place to delightful exclusive interviews with Hans Rosenfeldt, Oriol Paulo, and Jo Nesbo.
  • Doruk Tatar is exploring Turkey, where spies are everywhere but spy fiction is nowhere to be found.
  • On her regular column exploring the gastronomical preferences of fictional detectives, Fulya Turhan wrote about what Sherlock Holmes eats and drinks.
  • On his regular column exploring the musical preferences of fictional detectives, Onur Bayrakçeken wrote about what New Orleans listened to while chasing the Axeman.
  • Özlem Özdemir wrote about Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö's creation Martin Beck and what this series tells us after 55 years.
  • Damla Yazıcı wrote a review on Turkish crime novel Rakun by Suat Duman.
  • Suat Duman, Çağatay Yaşmut and Ercan Akbay are also in our new issue with their short stories.
Very important academic research is carried out in the field of crime literature, TV series/cinema. And new detective novels, serials and films are made available in different countries every day. We are very happy to be able to publish an English edition on the history of detective fiction, current debates, and academic research for readers all over the world who love this genre. We embark on the project of 221B English Edition, hoping to establish a cross cultural dialog and network.
